Deforestation is an urban reality that we cannot escape from. Although India has progressed multifariously in the last few decades, the industrial revolution has led to a considerable reduction in the amount of forest cover. According to India State of Forest Report of 2015, India’s forest covers 21.34% of the country’s land mass. This is significantly less compared to countries like United States (33.9%) and Canada (40%). For a city like Mumbai, where everyone moves at the speed of light, the natural, green foliage has been replaced by a concrete jungle.
Additionally, deforestation has played a major role in the rising temperatures witnessed globally. The ill effects of deforestation are experienced all over the world. The soaring temperatures, the noticeable delay in monsoon every year and the melting of ice at a rapid rate have placed us in a real climate crisis. We all need to step up and do whatever possible to reverse the drastic effects while we can. Planting trees in our city, which will benefit our ecosystem throughout their lifespan, is a small step that we can take today.
Navi Mumbai, which is on the outskirts of the city, has always had a considerable amount of green foliage. But the rate of industrialization and the influx of population has made it difficult to maintain the forest cover. Realizing the importance of reforestation, we have started a plantation project, which with your support, will help us plant 30,000 trees in Navi Mumbai. We will plant saplings under your name for a humble contribution of your choice. By contributing as little as Rs. 100, you will have a young sapling planted which will take us a step closer to our ultimate goal.
Our objective behind starting this project is to see our beloved Navi Mumbai become green again. Filled with lush foliage and beaming with greenery that is pleasing to the eyes and is also an important factor in maintaining our ecological balance. This step will also benefit our coming generations as we will be leaving behind a world that benefits and is conducive to our survival. We, as individuals, can do our bit and collectively can have an impact so big that can make our governments take notice and can better our environment gradually, one step at a time.
On a government level, every country is trying to cut back on CO2 emission and reduce greenhouse gas discharge. The Paris Climate Agreement has managed to achieve substantial progress and is a watershed moment in the history of climate change. South Korea has pledged to go 100% renewable and not depend upon fossil fuels for energy generation. These positive steps provide an impetus and motivation to continue on our path of a greener and cleaner planet Earth.
A simple gesture like planting a tree will go a long way in improving our current global warming crisis. Trees and forests keep our ecosystem cool and thriving. Apart from maintaining the optimum oxygen levels in the environment, every part of the tree can find use in our day-to-day lives. Our planet is unique and one-of-a-kind, because it supports life. Let us protect our planet by preserving Mother Nature in its authentic form.
